McLaughlin Assignment 9 DUE 11/17/10
Based on our discussions in class and the resources listed, respond to the following questions in no less than 150 words:
A critical issue must be decided by the US Congress before the end of the year: what to do about the Bush era tax cuts. In 2000, President Bush lowered the Federal income tax brackets to the levels indicated below. These tax rates were renewed in Bush’s second term and are set to expire December 31 of this year. Without any changes the brackets will go up to the levels indicated below. Basically, Congress faces one of three options: 1) Extend the tax cuts for all brackets; 2) Extend the tax cuts for certain brackets; or 3) End the tax cuts for all brackets.
President Obama has stated his intention was to increase only the last two brackets (33% and 35%) and leave the other brackets at the Bush Era levels. http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2010/11/12/obama-says-hes-not-caving-on-tax-cuts/?iref=allsearch
| Income Bracket (Single) | Current Tax Rate | New Tax Rate | % of Total Taxpayers in Bracket (as of 2008) |

If you were a senator or representative in Congress, what would you do about the Bush Tax Cuts? Would you extend them all? Would you extend some but not others? Would you extend none of them? Why? How would you defend your position to angry voters whose taxes you may be raising?
If I were a senator or representative in Congress and I had to make a choice about the Bush Tax Cuts I would most definitely not extend any of them. I feel that for the past eight years we have been fallowing the Bush Tax Cuts and look at us now, Bush though that the cuts would help us grow stronger and better but they didn’t we are trillion dollars in depth. We tried it didn’t work now its time to do something else that will work! We need to give a little more as a whole to get back and if it means we need to have higher taxes we need to do it to get us back on track. As for all the angry voters whose taxes I may be raising I think that at this point we all say no keep the bush tax cuts or keep some and not others if we were to listen to all of them we would be hurting the nation and economy more than it already is. We need to act upon the problem now, not wait for it to get worse which it will if we keep the tax cuts. We have been treated like babies for way too long this is why we are here today when it comes to our economy.
ReplyDeleteI don't think It would be fair if they taxed the "rich" only. We are for the people, by the people and if this country is what it says it is made out to be everyone is treated equally no matter what. So it would be in some way a violation of there rights. If someone worked hard to earn their money they should be able to keep as much of it as they could. This country gives almost everyone an equal opportunity it's weather or not you want to grab it. Another way to look at it; is the "rich" create many of the jobs, if they are taxed higher than everyone in order to make that money they are losing back they could start laying off workers and the unemployment rate would increase. Having a negative impact on our country. So treat everyone equally and raise all if your going to raise one.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a senator or representative in Congress, I would temporarily extend the tax cuts, to to the fact that we've had this system in place for a while now and this is the only way to keep things regulated. I feel if we were to drop everything now and start a new ball game, nobody would know what to do or who to go to. Therefore, keeping these cuts in place a little while longer. I, being a senator or representative; would be able to gather with my peers and come up with a polished plan that everyone can agree with for the most part. If we stopped now, there would be too much mayhem and nothing would get done. I would be realistic with my explanation toward the people, obviously someone is going to have to pay more. In the meantime, we would be able to figure out a plan and get the people's input.

If were a senator or representative in congress i would vote with Obama's proposed policy by having only the top two brackets increased. I believe that right now we can't increase taxes on the working class who need money to pay rent buy groceries and provide for thier families. If we tax only those making 173,00 or higher or revenue will got go down as bad and people making that amount wont be worried about thier taxes going slightly up. On the show the conservatives believed that you need to keep the brackets the same because the rich provide hte jobs not the poor and if the wealthy people arent taxed they will ahve more to provide jobs. I believe that in a Capitalist society money will not trickle down the economic ladder the rich will simply manifest there earnings.

If I was senator or a representative in congress I would do anything that is possible to help out the people and making sure that they are being helped I would mainly help out the working class because I feel like this is the class that is not mainly looked at in society today. I feel that we are neglected and stuck between the rich and the poor and Know one acknowledges us the working class. I would extend other for the simply fact is that I feel that your income should rely on how much taxes you pay. I feel that the rich should pay the highest amount on taxes because they can afford it. I don’t believe that they will be the ones firing us because they make the jobs. Yes they for sure give us jobs but who actually works and does the labor we do not them! They get the credit dough for owning big corps while we sit back and rot. It’s not fair and uncalled for. The Rich should stop whining and they should get over it. I would defend my positions by showing the working class examples. I also know that we Americans are mainly the working class so I think I would have a lot of back when it comes around
If I were a senator or representative in congress I would vote to extend all or most of the tax cuts. They all seem to have had more positive than negative results throughout the years. If congress took back some or all of the tax cuts people would have to pay a lot more money than they are now and it could become very difficult for many families. So many people are struggling to pay their bills as it is. It just wouldn’t make sense to pile higher pills on. If the tax cuts are not extended than things may turn for the worse for our shaky, recovering economy. Small business in particular would most likely suffer if all the tax cuts were to be taken away. If all the tax cuts were extended than most of the voters would be happy. They would be able to keep their benefits and have extra money in their pockets.

ReplyDeleteIf I were Senator or a representative in Congress I would only extend certain tax cuts. After reading the links provided in the blog assignment, I was able to get a clearer understanding of the effects of extending or terminating the Bush Tax Cuts. Considering we are recovering from extremely hard times it would be a burden on families all over the country if we were to exterminate all of the cuts. If Congress doesn't extend the tax cuts, families will be paying more in taxes come 2011. Although we are dealing with extremely tough times, the economy still needs to continue working towards bringing itself back up and in result some of Bush's tax cuts will need to be terminated. I agree with Obama that only certain tax cuts will remain in order to keep our economy going. I think that the Bush tax cuts for both middle-income taxpayers and the wealthy should be extended for two years. Like Orszag stated, more permanent tax cuts are unaffordable at this time because of the impact on the deficit.
If I were a Representative in Congress I would extend none of the tax cuts. As I read the article, I realized that extending the tax cuts are a bad choice to do when we are in a recession. Since we are in a recession, the economy isn’t really doing well, and if we extend tax cuts now, it will be like having money that the people will not be able to spend. No one would be able to do anything with them, because we would have no where and nothing to spend it on. That’s why Bush lowered Taxes and gave back money to the people to help our economy. Even if some are in favor of extending the tax cuts it’s not fair for the people who are paying most of them. If we want to stimulate the economy and make America like it was before, we can not afford to extend the tax cuts because that would only add to our budgets and our deficits.
ReplyDeleteIf I was a senator or representative in Congress, I would want to extend the tax cuts for the middle class and lower income families, while raising the higher income families. I have the same ideals as Obama does in this time of the situation. I think he has a handle on what he wants out of this, and it is to benefit the people. Honestly, if the taxes go up for everyone, it would hurt businesses if people can't spend as much as they would use to on things. The taxes are already a big expense taken out of people's pockets, and it almost feels like their hard work is being taken away from them, for the government, when people know they will spend their money on something unnecessary. The government should use the taxes to help pay off the debt, instead of having it used for all the other local and State things we have, or they can find another way to save up money, without spending it all the time. I would not want to extend the higher income brackets of 33 and 35, because if they decide to raise the taxes on the richer, it might be more beneficial to the deficit, if more money from them is coming out. Extending none of them is not a good idea, because even though the article said extending the tax cuts for the middle class would cost 1.6 trillion dollars, it seems that if you tax the middle class any more, there will be more poverty. If they decide to raise them, businesses should look out and decrease their prices somehow, if they still want to make business. People already don't have enough money, it would just make it that much harder for them to pay off any bills. In my position, only the richer people would get upset, and might disagree to raising the taxes. However, I would tell them, that it is more beneficial to take more from them to give back to the economy.

If I were a senator or a representative in Congress what I would do about the Bush Tax Cut is extend all higher quality and Companies that can afford it. I don't find it much of a loss to them because if they are benefited with money than it shouldn't be such a problem. I would defend my position to angry voters whose tax I may raise to telling them that its time to give back to America and get over it because they are making so much money so unless it makes a difference then to stop complaining because that money will supposedly also be beneficial to them somehow.

If I was a senator or representative in Congress I would increase only the last three brackets. With only 7% of the population being affected by this plan, I think this is the most reasonable and efficient way of helping, even if slightly, with our debt and deficit. We cannot completely extend the Bush tax cuts across the board, nor can we end all of them. With the economy still not up to par and families struggling to meet current tax rates it is not wise to spike up the costs even more for middle class citizens. Raising tax rates on the people who have the financial means to meet them is a way for more money to be raised while still accommodating the middle class strugglers. I would defend my position to angry rich voters who would be affected by these tax increases by giving inspirational and persuasive speeches. I would talk about how our country is in dire need of assistance from its citizens. The people who can, need to lend a hand, financially to stop our spiraling downward path of destruction. I would explain the situation and stress the importance of these increases and show direct impacts it will have on our country and in term them. Explaining that helping their neighbors in need is what being a true U.S. citizen is all about. Kind of playing a guilt trip on the voters; letting them know that they might have cousins or friends in the middle class and that they would be helping them. Getting to the heart of a person can really change their originally outlook.

If I were a senator or a representative in Congress, I would agree with Obama's intentions, and extend the tax cuts for certain brackets, which would be only the last two brackets. The 33 percent bracket would extend up to 36 percent, and the 35 percent bracket would raise up to 36.7 percent. I think that considering Congress was thinking of raising all of them, this would be a better idea to just raise them by a little percent, for the people who can actually pay for them in the first place. The 33 and 35 percent brackets all consist of the above upper class families, like I said before, the ones who can afford to pay taxes. Even though taxes would be staying the same for the middle and lower classes, the upper class families will not be paying so a drastic change, which makes it somewhat fair. I would defend my position to angry voters by attempting to offer them something in the home run, that I would have to think more about. -Chelsea R.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a senator or representative in Congress, I would like to extend the Bush Tax Cuts, but I would only extend the lower-income households and the middle-income households, because both of them have to pay a lot more tax if the Bush Tax Cuts stop. Especially the lower-income households, they have to pay 5% more if the Bush Tax Cuts doesn’t continue. The higher-income households shouldn’t extend the Bush Tax Cuts because it doesn’t change that much after it stops. Economic hasn’t improved yet, if we stop the Bush Tax Cuts now it’ll turn down right away. I don’t think after couples marry, they should pay more tax. It’ll only change their mind to not to marry, because they don’t want to pay more tax.
ReplyDeletePd 5
If I were a senator or representative in Congress, I would extend all of the Bush tax cuts because the nation is still in a recovery. I think it is in the nation’s best interest to keep them, otherwise the country could possibly once again fall into a recession. It would be wiser to wait for the nation to completely recover from the last recession; after that, a raise in taxes can be considered. It wouldn’t be fair to raise taxes on certain people because the nation as a whole was hit by the recession, therefore we all deserve the opportunity to an equal recovery. Small businesses might be financially hurt if the tax cuts are terminated. We need the success of small businesses to keep the economy going, so it is vital to extent the Bush tax cuts temporarily.
ReplyDeleteMariela Ortiz (period 3)
If i was a senator I would extend none of them because mostly everybody is doing well with the taxes now and not complaining as much. If we raise the taxes for all of them then that would be worse for the people because of money problems that they could be facing. This would cause a lot of strikes and other stuff. I would defend my position by letting the people know that this would benif them a lot to keep the taxes just how they are. If they dont agree then we would change it later on but its going to be worse for them because its going to cost them to much money.
ReplyDeleteChristopher Caraballo Period 5
What i would do regarding the bush tax cuts is i would not temporarily extend them.i wouldn't extend any of them and let the new rates take effect. the reason why is because then it wouldn't take us as long to pay off the deficit even tho Americans have to pay more its going to benefit substantially in the long run. i would say that in order to pay off the deficit we cant keep the bush tax cut's because that would only stall us paying off the national debt.
ReplyDeleteFrom my point of view - which would be just logical and practical – why are the lowest incoming people going to take on the real back work and pay an extra 5 percent when they don’t have that money to give it up? I mean, just the fact that they make less than 10 grand a year should be a sign to congress that because they make the least which means they have the least to contribute they should have the lowest tax rate. I’m stunned that congress thinks that by increasing the new tax rate starting from lowest to highest income just because they make up the majority to the least that more money will be coming in because that means that those who have extra money can’t contribute and those that need their money desperately will only be dug more into their hole of financial crisis as they are forced to do this. Congress really has this all backwards – if they really want to bring more money, the middle three brackets should be where they want to increase the tax rate because that’s their majority. Minorities including the last two and the first two should pay extreme because of the circumstances that they are under. A little less 2 percent for those who make more than 373,000$, I think that we can afford to increase their tax rate to at least 6 percent. They won’t break their banks because of a little interest on their part and though they are minority they will be bringing enough amounts to contribute to Congress.
ReplyDeleteAs a senator, I need to think strategically what each bracket group should pay so that at the end everyone’s paying different amounts but the same income is coming in. Those at the first two , and the last two should in total be contributing the same amount as the middle three because of the conditions that they are to work with.

There is a saying the poorer get poorer and the richer only get richer. Everyone is equal in the United States, it wouldn't be fair to treat the poor and the rich differently. Then again if you are wealthy you are in a different class than someone who is considered middle class or poor. The high income should have some sort of extension to their bush taxes, just because there is a debt and won't be any other ways to get rid of that debt or deficit. The poor and the middle class should not have the extension for bush tax, they should end. It should end because if the people don't have enough money to pay for taxes what kind of money are they going to have to pay bills or buy things, if there isn't money to buy anything in stores the economy will fall and that's another issue. Extension to bush tax cuts for the poor or middle class can lead to a depression.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Obama "I also believe that it would be fiscally irresponsible for us to permanently extend the high income tax cuts. I think that would be a mistake, particularly when we've got our Republican friends saying that their number 1 priority is making sure that we are dealing with our debt and our deficit." This is very true and it would be a mistake to PERMANENTLY extend the bush tax cuts for the high income, although making an acception for increasing it by a decimal or keeping it the same.
CHRISTINA CHRONOS PRD 3
I believe that the Bush Tax Cuts was not the best path to do down for the economy in the first place but since we are now recovering from the recession, it is in our best interest to keep them across the board for all people until 2012. To end them now or to raise taxes on the rich would be foolish. The problem is not taxing but spending; there needs to swift and almost radical changes made to policies such as social security and national defense. Our national GDP is 14.9 trillion dollars; we should not be having a 1.42 trillion dollar deficit in theory. So what is the problem? It should not be taxing because we have a high enough GDP so it must be government spending. If the US is spending 2 dollars for every1 dollar it receives, then there is no way possible that we can fix the deficit. First plug up the leaking holes that is spending, then fill it up again with money, money that will stay there instead of leaking out again through the hole. The best solution is to keep the tax cuts till 2012 making it a hot button and unavoidable issue but hopefully the economy will have adjusted itself to stable proportions by then. There is another proposition to the issue which is to just raise taxes on the rich who is making more than a specified amount (200,000 dollars or more) which also very unwise. As of now, the rich pay about 33% to 35% of their income to taxes which are a huge amount to begin with. Politicians for increased taxes argue that the rich can handle the raise because they are the rich but they forget that it is the rich who also generate a major portion of labor in this country. A company’s most expensive resource is its labor and if there are higher taxes, there are going to be more layoffs creating more unemployment. To raise taxes is not the answer to fixing our deficit, instead we must look to cut government spending so that fixing the economy is doable and successful creating a more fiscally responsible future.
ReplyDeleteBush’s tax cuts need to be changed its amazing how people who make over 200,000 dollars pay $0dollars in taxes. Who does this benefit not the people who essentially in theory are the power. The politicians they’re the ones with the money they’re the ones not paying taxes and while the working class “voice of the government” are paying taxes although that are low we still are getting that money out. Not only that, but the total income coming in from the taxes was 2.74 trillion dollars less during the eight years of Bush’s presidency. Everything went down income, tax payer income and there were fewer jobs with lower pay. Something needs to be done and it needs to be done now. By extending Bush’s tax cuts the politicians are basically just leaving a huge job for the next people in office to handle. This cannot happen because in my opinion we will eventually go back into a recession. The higher class and higher income people need to start paying taxes and of course the argument against that is that they are offering the jobs and that still jobs will be cut if taxes are raised. My argument against that is that they have the money they have barely been paying taxes and with less and less of an income coming in from these taxes we risk going into another recession if we continue this way.
ReplyDeleteI think if I were a senator or representative in congress, I would extend some of the tax cuts because extending all of them would add to the deficit. I would extend some of the cuts because not extending any of the tax cuts would be too much of burden that middle income people would have to pay. I would extend some of the tax cuts because based on the article letting the high-income tax cuts expire and using the money for aid to the states, extending unemployment insurance benefits, and tax credits that aid job creation measures would have about three times the impact on GDP. I would defend my position against angry voters whose taxes I may be raising by advocating that if it wasn’t done that then it would only get worse and that a more permanent extension is unaffordable

If I were a senator or representative in congress I would leave the Bush Tax Cuts alone. I wouldn't change them or do anything to them. So far the Bush Tax Cuts have been helping out our Economy and by raising them or changing them it could possibly destroy us. These tax cuts have proven to work in 2001 and 2005 and I think they should be extended until the new election in 2012. If we get a new president during this election they might have a clearer idea on how to make these tax cuts work in our government and help the people out so maybe we won't go into another recession. These tax cuts have helped fix deficit and debt and haven't proven to be bad for our economy.

If I were a senator or representative in congress, I would only extend a few brackets. I would do whatever is possible to make the lower-class people more comfortable. I think it would make sense to tax people based on their income rather then tax everyone the same. For the rich they would have no problem paying their taxes compared to lower-class people who aren't making as high of an income, they would struggle to pay the same amount of taxes. The only angry voter I may wind up with is those of the upper class, but they have to understand that people with a much lower income then them are having extreme difficulties with paying off their taxes as those of upper-class can pay them off with no struggles at all.
ReplyDelete-Jessica Morales
If I was senator or a representative in congress I would only extend certain tax cuts. i feel that if they are not extended that this whole economy will fall into tiny pieces. That means that we will be paying extremely high taxes. The way i see it, is that this economy needs to get itself together; as like Obama has said, that it will only keep the economy going. People already don't have enough money, it would just make it that much harder for them to pay off any bills.

10%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35%
Brackets want to be raised to:
15%, 28%, 31%, 36%, 39.6%
All of these brackets are raised way too high. Our economy is down right now. It is hard for people to find jobs, never the less for people to keep jobs. Families are struggling to support their children. How are they supposed to support if their taxes are going to be raised? If the economy was doing well, I could see how they would want to raise taxes but if people can barely hold jobs and pay for schools, that is just going to put the people in much more debt. Even though there are more "well-off" people then others, everyone is still suffering and it would not make sence to raise the taxes and have even more suffering in the United States. I would defend angry voters because I see how it makes them fustrated how they are sturggling to pay their bills and taxes right now and their going to have to pay even more yet they are not getting a raise at work to help them pay for it.

If I were a senator or representative in Congress, I would keep Bush Tax Cuts and I would them extend some but not others. The $373,651+ should have the new tax rate and the should add another group for millionaires or billionaires and their rate should be 39% and up. How would you defend your position to angry voters whose taxes you may be raising? I think its fair of what we all pay just because there persent is higher doesn't mean were not putting in money too, if some one has low income the should have a lower percentage to pay and since wealthier people have a larger income they should pay a higher percentage to even it out. Later on as our economy get better and we have better job to suit us and take care and cover or families finance that taxes should go up.
ReplyDeleteIf I was a senator in congress to this very day, there is no doubt in my mind that I would for sure extend the Bush tax cuts. AMERICA, HAS IT NOT DAWNED ON YOU YET THAT WE ARE IN A RECESSION? Why do you think I would extend them? We obviously need the money. Everyone living in this country today enjoys the freedoms and liberties that America has to offer. It makes me sick to my stomach (and I cannot even EMPHISIZE HOW SICK THIS MAKES ME), that people are no longer willing to do their part for the motherland. If blood is thicker than water, than soil is thicker than both, and people, you’re living on American soil. It is your responsibility to provide for this country, more than it is your responsibility to provide for yourself or your family. Oh, and if the tax payers have a problem with that, they can take their chances with another slime ball politician who will do worse things with their money than see it go to an excellent cause.

ReplyDeleteIt is very possible the 2012 election could bring a new president to office, who might have a different approach as to improve or change the tax cuts in our government. As of now, without a clear idea as to what to do, the Bush Tax Cuts should remain the same. These tax cuts have only helped us, and it would be irresponsible to end them at such a time.

If I was a senator or a repressive of congress I think I would not extend any of the Bush tax cuts because if it has worked for so long why would you want to change it. Since bush put these cuts in place it was to help us and become stronger. Also that if we want to get back on track and not worry about being in debt we might need to higher the tax’s just to make sure we have enough money coming in them going out. We can’t spend money that we don’t have it will make life harder and we will be in debt for a long time. The point of this is to try and get the country out of debt not trying to make it worse. With the Bush tax cuts it was trying to get us back on track but if they were just going to make the rich pay more it would be fair to everyone and it is like you or singling out one group an that wouldn’t be nice.

If I were a senator or representative in Congress, I would extend all of the Bush Tax Cuts. As shown on the Mclaighlin show taxes right now are fair. They want to raise these taxes all by a significant number. Taxes in the United States right now are 10%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35%. This is high enough considering the economy we are in. We are in a depression and they want to raise taxes on us. How are we supposed to pay, if we are struggling now. the new tax brackets are 15%, 28%, 31%, 36%, 39.6%. This is extremly high. It will be nearly impossible for people to afford this. Everyone will be giving their last pennies to the government to help support this new system. No one will be able to live comfortably. Families will be struggling at work and at school to pay for these taxes. Food wont be easy to buy, houses will be much harder to sell, jobs will decrease and people are in need of jobs and are still being layed off so how are they supposed to raise taxes and cut jobs? It does not make sence to me. The world is going to take a big turn for the worse if these taxes get passed. I would understand angry voters, because it makes me angry seeing that its merely impossible for people to have to pay this much, I just don't see it happening.

If I were a senator or representative in congress, I would extend the bush tax cuts for a while. it would be a national problem is the bush tax cuts were raised, I’m sure the wealthy wouldn’t mind but what about the poor and needy who are so dependent on things like Medicaid and social security. I think they would have a lot more to say about this and some would protest. Taxes I think should not be raised for all the social classes’ one particular class. We are all treated equally and one group should not be economically discriminated against because they are wealthy.
I would expand the bush tax cuts to the highest 2. These people are rich they dont need so much money they have enough. For the other ones I would leave it because people are already doing there very hardest to try and support the government and themselves and their families. They are everyday people just trying to earn a living, and you want to increase their taxes. What if they can barely afford what they have now. Does the government really want them to not having anything so that they really cant help the government. Come on thats just common sesne right there.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a U.S. Senator or representative in congress, I would do exactly what Obama wants to do. Obama and I believe that tax cuts should be extended for middle class and working families and that only the cuts for the high income earners should come to an end. The Republicans say they want to focus on the nations large deficit yet they oppose Obama's plan for the Bush Tax cuts. Some Democrats want to extend all cuts while some want to end them all. All I know is that is we want to make progress, were going to have to come to an agreement that makes everybody happy very soon.
