Based on our discussions in class and the resources listed, respond to the following questions in no less than 150 words:
Political advertisements are a huge part of candidates’ campaigns. These ads can be both positive (describing the qualifications and/or the accomplishments of the candidate) or negative (highlighting the mistakes or unpopular actions of the opponent). Whether an ad is positive or negative often has a significant effect on the its ability to influence voters.
Please review the following article, in which Times’ Frank Lunz describes what he has found to be the qualities that make a successful political ad:Also check out one of the ads we saw on this week’s McLaughlin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-Woa84xgaU (for Florida’s Kendrick Meek)
What qualities does Lunz identify as necessary for a successful political advertisement? Do you agree with his list? Why/why not? How does Meek’s advertisement measure up against Lunz’s standards? Do you think Meek’s ad is effective? Why/why not?
Bonus points: include a link to a political ad you saw on TV and thought was effective or ineffective and explain your rating.

ReplyDeleteSome of the qualities that Lunz identify as necessary for a successful political advertisement are Straight talk works best, be serious don’t make fun of others trying to make yourself look better, Being anti-Establishment is important, but being anti-Washington is essential and a few more. As for Meek’s advertisement it takes on a few of the points in the article but not all .Over all I feel its not trying to go in to deep because then that brings up issues and that’s not what this ad is for he just runs over the few things he stands for not really talking about Washington or other issues. Personally I feel that it is an effective ad just shows him in all positive ways and what he is all about so why not I think its different this is a way to try and reach out to the people.
Lunz suggests to keep the ads serious, straight to the point, and real. He also believes a necessary quality is to identify with the voters through the ads by relating to them with issues that voters find important. I agree with his list because when used effectively, these qualities in an ad can help evoke emotion in the viewer. Once a voter can relate to the candidate through the political ad they display, the vote for that candidate can pretty much be guaranteed. Meek keeps the ad serious, real, and straight to the point. He mentioned issues that are important to the voters, and offered possible solutions for those problems. (i.e. economic crisis, suggested increasing minimum wage.) I think that Meek’s campaign ad was effective because he mentioned issues that related to voters. When voters see that he knows the issues they find important and that he wants to work to resolve those issues, they will most likely approve of his candidacy.

I think this ad is ineffective because Grayson focuses on attacking his opponent rather than focusing on relating to the voter by offering solutions to issues they find important. I think that the comparison he made between his opponent and the taliban will really hurt him. It appears to me that he went over the top with this campaign ad.

According to Lunz in order for a political advertisement to be successful candidates have to despise politicians attacking each other. Also for the camera to get really close while the candidates are talking. Gives us the people a good close perspective and we can trust in them more. Candidates should not take bribes as a result of being government. It is really important and loyal to us that this doesn’t happen. It is crucial for the candidates to be serious when they talk because joking around about government makes us more likely to question our trust in them to get the job done. Yes, I do agree with his list because I think a candidate has to have all these qualities to earn our respect and possibly our vote. Meek's video advertisement has higher standards than Lunz because he is making a video that is a good visual. Yes, I think Meek's add is effective because he want to repeal the Bush tax cuts the video advertisement was well put together.
Lunz has listed 6 main qualities that he believes should be necessary for a successful political ad. Candidates who act like they ‘hate the game’, being anti washington, straight talk no play, not benefiting from specials favors, not being fake, and being serious at all times. Lunz is basically saying to get straight to the point in your advertisements, with no funny business. He is also saying that people most likely don’t care about what is special about yourself, or how you are different, they want to get straight to the point and know what you are offering to the community and how you will do so. I most likely agree with Lunz and his list, because honestly, people don’t care if you recorded yourself walking down the block and handing food to the homeless, what exactly is that saying? That you’re an all around nice person? Okay, thats great, but like I said before, what we want to know is what you will be doing to help the community and how you will be doing it, and how it benefits to us people. We don’t want to know the fake you, we want to know the real you. When it comes to Meek’s advertisement, it doesn’t even come close to Lunz’s standards. Meek is practically doing everything that Lunz said NOT to do. First off, you can obviously see how every scene was acted out, with his big smile and scripted words and scenes. He’s not being much serious either, or getting straight to the point. He’s listing things that make him look good. Even though Meek’s ad is happy, fun, and scripted, it’s not exactly effective, most likely people, as well as myself, probably can not take it so seriously.

Lunz's list of approval includes:
ReplyDelete1) an AD that doesn't trash talk the opponent or any candidate for that matter.
- in my opinion this is a good tip for politicans to follow because to me this race starts to become a competition between whose the worse out of them two and they start to lose sight of what's truly important: what they are standing for. And instead they want to act like children by bashing each other - that's so elementary school, nobody thinks its cool to make fun of each other. They shouldn't include the opponent in their ads, it should be focusing on them and on them only.
2)being anti-Washington.
-i'm not 100% on this because I don't understand entirely what's it means but from my understanding, the voters/people love when they see that the politican can have a point of view as they do when it comes to Washington. I believe that that this kind of thinking helps the voters recognize (or supposely believe) that those at Washington aren't excluded from what issues are being targeted - they too need to take responsiblity and have to make compromises like the rest of us.
3)straight talk is the way to go.
- I agree with this because it's annoying at least in my opinion to see someone else or have a narrative speak the entire time in a politican's ad. It almost has that indirect message that "we can't afford to speak in front of the camera because we're too good to be talking for ourselves, that's why we have others". When a poltiican is speaking in front of the camera straight to their voters it establishes a foundation to their audience because it sends a message that they are willing to listen to you and your concerns and that's important to people. I think that all politicans should start adopting this way of attention seeking.
4) Sacrifice is definitely a plus
- this key point that the Lunz made is very important and almost obvious because people all make the assumption that those who run for government are going to reward those who are tailgating with them as well. But that's not cool, if the politican is going to make some compromises then those who are in the campaign should too - it's loyality and it also sets an example to show that they truly do care about what they're standing for and they will stick to it no matter what.
5)Fake doesn't sell.
- this key point is a good one for politicans to take up on because the fake stuff shouldn't be part of your campaign or your ADS - ADS are suppose to be true and that's all. Not a maybe, or from someone simply facts, and acting doesn't help at all.
6)Be serious.
-When politicans make fun at others especially in a time where serious issues are becoming too much for some people it's going to make voters mad. And mad up to the point where they can't even stand your name and if your name isn't one that part of the voter, then you've lost a vote and probably respect. Elections are serious, so everything that goes into them should be serious especially if it's in AD.
I think that Meek's AD was alright, i mean the setting and the way he went about it was very creative and intriging but it wasn't as strong as what he was saying. And what he's saying should matter the most, he got most of the points right but I'm not too convinced about it.

Lunz identifies many qualities as necessary for successful political advertisement such as a candidate who hates the game, being anti- Establishment and anti- Washington, straight talk, sacrifice, not being fake, and be serious. I agree with this list I feel as though many representatives try to hard if you just show me that your seriousness and true to your words I will respect you much more. I don't want someone who is fake and will only tell me what I want to hear. I think Meek kept it to the point, he told you what he was fighting for and what he wanted and he didn't play around. He did it in his own environment and wasn't trying to be someone he wasn't. I think he meets Lunz's standards because he wasn't fake, he was serious but still trying to lighten up the commercial and he wasn't fooling around he got straight to the point. Meek's ad was effective because he wasn't trying to be someone he's not he was being himself and thats all that voters care about, they don't want someone fake they want someone real.

Throughout Lunz’s article he describes many attributes that are necessary for a successful political advertisement. Some of these qualities include: The politicians being anti-Washington because it shows the voters that they are just as unhappy with the current system as the voters are and they will make the changes that people want to see. They must be against the “dog-eat-dog” political game. This meaning that the politician isn’t one who takes part in the ongoing politician attacks. Politicians much also be real so the people whose votes that are wanted get a sense of humility for the candidate. Politicians but always be serious. When making joke it is very easily to offend people and make voters angry. This can lead to a decrease in votes. I disagree with this list because people if a candidate follows everything that is included in the list exactly to gain the votes they need, it will soon be hard to tell one candidate from the next. Yes, these are things that people like but if it isn’t want the politician believes in, they should conform themselves to it just to get a vote. I do believe that Meek’s advertisement was very effective. He targeted many big issues in a very short amount of time. The advertisement was upbeat and kept the view engaged towards what he was saying.
ReplyDelete~Sarah Bianchi
he identifies that the candidate that has the ad should be straight forward and not fake. i9 would agree with this list because i would prefer watching a candidate that has an ad that's different then every other ad that's on TV. i would say that it does not meet the standards that lunz had said. no i don't feel that this ad is effective because it seems like every other ad that's on TV and it also seems very fake as well.
ReplyDeleteLunz states that in order to have a successful political advertisement, you should be straight to the point, be tough, and not give false information. I agree with his list because he is saying that one should be short, sweet, and direct, with there ad. This way you don not bore the viewer and they get the message easily. You do not want a add that will confuse the viewer. Meek's advertisement was entertaining, short and got the message out there simply; there for it did meet the standards of Lunz's advertisement list, and was very effective to his viewers.
ReplyDeleteThis is in addition to my other post...The political ad that i posted was effective because it shows Paladino in a way that really exposes him and what he really is about what he represents. I feel that yes it was something done to show him only in a negative way but it was all true and done in a way that was believable . I think that ads like this one are very useful in my opinion.
ReplyDeletePeriod 5
ReplyDeleteA good Ad makes sure that the voters are kept engaged in the candidates so they will vote for them. They have to have a main point and make sure that the candidates will benefit from them. According to Frank Lunz, a good ad is effective if candidates follow these rules:
1. A candidate has to attack the opposite argument. "Because Americans loathe most Politicians, they love a candidate who hates the game" (As stated in the article) candidates who can show that they want change in a different way then their opponent, will get the respect of voters.
2. A good ad shows a candidate stating what the wish to improve issues in Washington. People want to hear that they can depend on someone who can fix anything that is "broken" in office. This example states "Being Anti-Washington is essential".
3. Another way that Ad campaigns can be successful is if the candidate looks straight into the camera. This way the voters can hear the politician speak clearer and we get a closer view of the candidate. Since we get a better view of the candidate represented and shown in the ad, voters tend to trust them more.
4. A candidate can not act Fake while promoting or doing their ads. An example of this was Linda Mahons ad. She spent $40,000 on the ad to hire actors talking about her, but that never sells with the viewers.
5. Voters also want to see an Serious campaigns. Lunz says that "While Mocking Nancy Pelosi made some Republican voters laugh, other Independent Voters were angered." People want to see that a campaign can serve its purpose without poking fun at anyone.
According to Frank Lunz, he thinks that an ad that wants to be successful should have theses in them. They will benefit the candidate greatly and won't cause them any trouble.
Lunz identify that if a political advertisement shows that a politician straight talk to voters and be serious on what he/she is going to do, against Washington D.C, he/she won't play tricks, and shows that he/she really understand what people needs and wants, the chance of him/her wining will be greater. I do agree with him, because I believe that if a person shows that they really care about people and will do something after he/she wins, people will vote for him/her. People know what's a good thing and bad thing. I do think Meek's advertisement is effective. He seems like he really understands what people want and he also uses the background to support those ideas.
ReplyDeletepd 5
Lunz mentions 6 rules that ads should do, so people can be able to like what they see and support the person running. The first rule was that politicians should show that they are against what is going on and all the problems occurring, because it makes the voters see that they want to actually change the status quo. The second rule was that the politician has to be against what Washington is and how it has become destroyed, in order to get more voters to believe them. The third rule was the politician should straight talk and be closer to the camera, because it makes them more trustworthy. The fourth rule was that if you don’t want the voters to think negatively and not support the politician, then the mantra “ If I have to sacrifice, so should my representatives,” should not be said in the ad. The fifth rule was that being fake and acting to sell the politician off positively does not work, and does more harm, so it should not be done. The last rule was to be serious and if showing an ad against the other sides do not joke around and make that person look silly, because it will make you look silly as well. Most of the rules on this list Lunz wrote are very good rules to use and I think those rules make the best ads. Being real and relatable to your voters is what will get the politician the respect they need. If you are childish and make another look bad, it can make you look even worse. I found Meeks ad to be truthful enough that people would believe it a lot, since he showed the issues that many are upset with and how he is the only one who went against those ideas and wanted to change them. He was straight talking and looking at the camera, making him more respectful, and he was serious about what he wanted to say, not making a single person look bad at all. He made himself more of a regular person in normal surroundings with others, and presenting his opinions to certain topics. It seemed effective to me, because I was thinking that if he really is the only one who wants certain changes to ideas, then he might be of use to support. He seemed to be able to get people to understand his point of views, explain how he really is different from the others.

ReplyDeleteThe qualities that Lunz identifies for a successful political advertisement is suggestions he stated such as
rule #1: they love a candidate who hates the game.
Rule No. 3: Straight talk works best.
Rule number 5: don’t be fake
Rule No. 6: Be serious
______________
I do agree with Frank Lunz list because being straight forward does work best. Nobody wants someone that’s going to be 'going in circles' and most of all and a candidate who hates that game is good to because it makes a voter feel like the candidate is 'one of them' and clearly understands them. However in rule # 5 it explains how Connecticut GOP Senate candidate Linda McMahon advertised through a commercial with two chatty women I don't personally think that so harmful. If anything it’s only cheesy but at least in some way it can reach out to a different crowd of people in a good way. Maybe it grabbed an old person’s attention or an actor; everything counts as long as it’s in the right way, and not having a negative campaign towards the opponent.
______________
MEEK:
I believe that this would have been an alright advertisement if it wasn't stating the "obvious" if that is how he really is. He sounds desperate and there are other ways to state in, then again he was being straight forward, but does he really know if it’s going to be that easy? That is why he cannot state that he is the ONLY one because at the end of the day what makes him so special? This can turn many voters off because they don't one anyone over confident they need someone just right.

Lunz identifies qualities such as truthfulness, integrity, and honesty as important basic values to show. Voters also respond well to people who seem like mavericks and are not considered Washington “insiders.” I completely agree with Lunz’s list for a successful political advertisement. Currently, people do not trust the government nor do they want anything to do with Washington. The Democrats are not doing enough and the GOP is just out of whack. I candidate who holds himself to Lunz’s standards would be a breath of fresh air for the people. I also suspect that is the reason President Obama was elected President. Even though he was extremely eloquent with his speeches, the more important things to consider were how he was straightforward about the problems, and gave realistic solutions. He also appeared humble, energetic yet serious about the issues which won him the votes of the people.
ReplyDeleteMeek’s ad measure up to Lunz’s standards very well because he runs such a positive ad. He is successful in putting himself out there but I question the effectiveness of the ad. Meek’s ad is only effective to people who have no idea who is running or have no idea what the other candidate’s policies are. A good political ad includes both attack portions and positive portions. With that, the candidate can denounce the other person while showing to the public how he can overcome areas what his opponent lack. I believe that is the correct way to run a political ad.
EC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nA1MwOE86U
The political ad I chose is the “Remote Control” ad put out by McCain in 2008 emphasizing Obama’s inexperience and inability to be an effective leader. The ad is many difference clips compiled together from people such as Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden both talking about the inexperience and ineffectiveness of Obama. It even has a clip of Obama from 2004 doubting whether he himself would be an effective leader. The clip then switches to Hillary Clinton stating that McCain “would bring a lifetime of experience…and Senator Obama will bring a speech from 2002.” To make this ad even more affective is that behind the politicians talking, there is a montage of clips showing the violence in Georgia, terrorists holding up weapons, and Vladimir Putin. My rating for this ad would have to be a 10 because it is so effective at getting its point across. The viewer after viewing the clip has to doubt the qualifications of Obama when his own party members are questioning his experience. As a result, this political ad is an extremely effective one.

Frank Lunz from the New York Times explains what strategies work and dont work in political ads. He states that no voter likes to see the same old political jargon. They like to see politicians give brutal honesty. When a politician tells you their true feelings good or bad it catches people off guard. Another tactic is fighting Washington. Too many ads have I seen on my own accord the politician
ReplyDeletewill say im ready to fight Washington. Voters like to see they're politicians fighting for the working mann and the little guy. I strongly agree with Lunz's list of tactics, voters like to see they're candidate serious and ready to go no badmouthing others or creating fake scenes. I believe Meek's ad was very effective and hit the criteria for Lunz's strategies but he still didnt win on election night so obviously he did'nt seem serious enough to the american people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEPh_KlTyII
Many people are affected by the ads, they do not favor them. According to Alex Sink she is sick of politicians attacking each other, voters agree as well. Ads are not always the motivation and interest to the people, it's the truth that comes out of a politician that is. Spending money here and there won't do it, being real and having a great speech would conquer that any day in the real world. Having a sense of humor is always a great thing, when it comes to being part of the government it's best to keep serious especially when it comes to your people and the duties that will have to done for the country. Meek's advertisement measures up to Lunz's standards because it is everything that Lunz wrote about. You can tell that Meek spent a lot of money on the ad, wasn't too serious and seemed a little fake. Meek's ad wasn't too effective because of the fact that it seemed to be acted out and a bit fake. An ad shouldn't be the effect on voters, it is, knowledge, power and intelligence.

Lunz identifies certain elements necessary for a successful political advertisement, they include: showing hatred towards politicians, being anti-Establishment as well as anti-Washington, straight talking; looking directly at the camera lens, the "If I have to sacrifice, so should my representatives." mantra is present, no fakeness; no fake actors, and being serious.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree one hundred percent with this list. Certain aspects of campaign ads do not comply with the ones Lunz created however the ads are still prosperous. I recently saw a campaign add entitled “Mourning in America”, a remake of the 1984 Ronald Reagan ad “Morning in America” found at the below address which goes against all of Lunz’s requirements and is still extremely effective. This ad gets to the viewers emotions and hits pivotal senses to create a feeling that they must vote republican. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YXqf_6ug54&feature=player_embedded#at=27
However, Meek’s advertisement touches upon all of Lunz’s standards and is as equally as successful/effective. Meek makes plenty of camera close up eye contact, addresses his issues without putting down his competitors, shows (in the pizzeria) that he is willing to sacrifice and get down and dirty for his people, etc.

An effective political advertisement, as Lunz describes, needs to be direct and serious. A successful political advertisement also requires a sense of sincerity and it is most effective when a candidate knows what the viewers are feeling because voters would agree and it would raise the popularity. I agree with Lunz list because they’re ways to gain attention from the public and least effective ways to gain popularity. I think maybe Lunz could have mentioned that the candidates should have more enthusiasm because I do not think an advertisement would be as effective if it was boring. I think Kendrick Meeks was effective but I have not seen the opposing candidate’s advertisement to make a clear judgment. However, Meek’s advertisement was direct and had a little sense of sincerity but a lot of enthusiasm. I think Meek connects with various groups of people and their needs, such as, people that work minimum wage.

Basically Lunz is telling people that for a successful advertisement you need to be the people’s voice, argue their points, and be on their side, show that you are the people. He tells candidates that they should be straight forward, serious, and act like you hate the game which it’s contradicting in a way because if your being straight forward how can you also act like anything. Either way I do agree with Lunz’s ideas because basically what politics and elections are all about it selling yourself and selling your ideas, and doing whatever it takes to do it. I think Meek’s ad is a great example of Lunz’s tips it shows him being with the people and also says what he has and will do for the people. His ad automatically gives the feeling of trust because he raises ideas that are beneficial for the common man and these are the people who are voting. so as you can see it’s really just who plays the better game.

Alex sink uses one of Lunz’s tips to make her ad successful. She shows that she hates the game and two she says something like partisanship no patience for it, and in other where she seems to be telling us the “truth.” These two ads are effective because she is addressing the people and, she appears to come across and straight forward, she always implies that she is with the people on their side. ReplyDeleteFrank Lunz explains that it is necessary for a political candidate to exemplify "straight talk" as well as establishing a common ground with the people by arguing "if I have to sacrifice so should my representatives" in order to establish a successful political advertisement. Lunz basically explained that the closer a politician gets the the camera the more relatable he or she is and the viewers are most likely to believe in what they are saying. He stated that when viewers can see a candidate up close they tend to trust them more, something which is key in gaining followers. Lunz also stated that voters will respond very negatively to any evidence that candidates benefited from special favors as a result of their position in government. For example, "Sharron Angle is closing her Nevada Senate campaign by attacking Harry Reid for becoming a millionaire on a Senator's salary and living in a Ritz-Carlton in Washington," as he stated in an article he had written for the Times. I agree with these two suggestions by Lunz. When candidates can establish a common ground with viewers they are more likely to believe in what they are saying and vote for them. Meek's advertisement is a clear example of Lunz's strategies being put into action. In the advertisement Meek creates a common ground with the viewer by being around other people and explaining his ideas in a clear, coherent manner, that is beneficial for the people watching. Viewers automatically trust Meek.
Lunz has diffrent qualities that is being anti washington, straight talk no play, not benefiting from specials favors, and being serious at all times. Yea i agree with his list because he likes to get to the point and likes to take stuff seriously which is a good thing. Candidates who act like they are anti Washington, strictly just talking, not benefiting from specials treatment, remaining truthful and serious at all times. Lunz is trying to show a point that candidates should be straight forwards in their advertisements to know what you are offering to the community and how you will be able to improve it. I mostly agree with Lunz and the list he made because I speak on behalf of myself, when people don’t care what commercial has the best effects, length, or dramatic skit. The issues and solutions are more important factors in an election. Meek’s advertisement does not coexist with Lunz’s standards. Meek’s commercial was very sketched out. His over the top serious attitude, allowed the viewer to see through the smoky mirrors he put up. It would cause anyone to not take him serious.

I agree with Lunz's list because he is being straight foward in the best way of running a campaign. His studies show what our citizens are into and what they are not into. If you are honest in your campaign, are strong and don't knock other runners, you have the possibility of winning. According to Lunz there are 6 qualities for a successful political advertisement, an AD that doesn’t trash talk opponents, being anti-Washington, straight talk is the way to go, sacrifice is an added plus, being fake doesn’t sell, and always be serious. I agree with his list completely. A voter doesn’t want to see a candidate trash talking the other because it shows pettiness and it’s not professional. Being anti-Washington doesn’t help you because I think that disagreeing with what Washington has already done for us, is showing the people that you want change but possibly too much change. Talking straight forward is the way to go because you don’t want someone who’s going to represent you to ‘beat around the bush’. When voters also see that you sacrificed something in order to listen to the people well, it’s just an added plus. Being fake doesn’t sell explains its self. Finally, being serious is the way to go because it shows the viewers that you know how to handle situations and know how to deal with people and the issues that you will be challenged with when the candidate goes into office.
ReplyDeleteI think that Meek’s advertisement was ok. The setting and the creativity of the whole advertisement was something that did catch my attention. However, what he was wasn’t very strong. What the candidate says is always the most important thing.

Lunz suggested basically...
ReplyDelete1. A person who is blah, who doesn't really stand for anything BUT wants to see some type of change.
2. "Anti-Washington"- Someone who doesn't think Washington (Government) is doing a good job.
3. Someone who is up close and personal, no acting. Just them talking about what they want done.
4. Everyone has to give up something.
5. Someone who is completely there selves and isn't "scripted".
6. Being serious.
I don't agree with the whole list exactly. The first rule, someone who doesn't stand for anything. I think in order to capture someone's full attention as a voter. You have to specify what you want done and what you stand for. Not just sitting there, talking about how they would like change. This makes it easier for the voter to identify and see what similarities are present.
As far as Congress candidate, Kendrick Meek's ad. It complies with Lunz suggestion of Up close and personal. It was seemed scripted with the boat rides and restuarant scene. He doesn't talk about Washington, he says what he stands for. He doesn't say anything about giving up anything, and the ad is upbeat and such. I believe he could of gave somemore information about his self and his exact plan for Floridans if he is elected? I get the basis. He could of been way more effective.

The rules according to Luz are quite simple. Firstly, “Hate the game”. Secondly, be both “Anti establishment”, and “Anti Washington”, thirdly “straight talk” (though politicians are completely incapable of “being straight”). Fourthly, some rule about “sacrifice” (which is OBVIOUSLY a lie). Fifthly, “Don’t be Fake”, oh my god do I even need to say it? And lastly, number six “be serious”. These rules are terrible, but effective. I find it absolutely horrendous that Americans will fall into this trap (ala our fine model example of a 51st President). However, it is inevitable. Almost as inevitable as a politician who is going to make these promises will be guaranteed to break most if not all of them within a single day in power. An old friend once taught me an expression, and it’s quite relevant to today’s times. “Poly, meaning many, Ticks, Blood sucking bugs”.

The qualities that Frank Lunz identifies as necessary for a successful political advertisement are Because Americans loathe most politicians, they love a candidate who hates the game, Being anti-Establishment is important, but being anti-Washington is essential, Straight talk works best, "If I have to sacrifice, so should my representatives" and Fake doesn't sell. Each of these captions talks about all the ways to have a successful campaign. I agree with Lunz's way of running a successful campaign because it showss that you have to be honest, straight foward and show proof of how you are going to make a change is society.
ReplyDeleteKendrink Meek is running for Deomocratic for senate. In his campaign he talks about what makes him qualified for Democratic senate. He says that he is the only one against private taxes and social security, only one who is pro choice, the only one against high credit card fees, the only one who wants to raise minimum wage, etc. He wants to make a change and does not bad mouth any other candidates. He only says what he is going to do to better society. His ad was clean and straight foward. It was well done and effective.

I agree with Lunz's statement that order to have a successful political advertisement, you must be straight to the point, tough, and make sure all given information is accurate. People do not want to sit through a long documentary about the candidate's life. A short and direct advertisement always works best. Maybe by even throwing in a few interesting facts, it may grab the voter's attention even more. You don't want to confuse them with terms they may not understand or by giving too much information. Meek's advertisement was entertaining, and relayed the message out immediately. It met the standards of Lunz's advertisement checklist, and was extremely effective towards viewers.

Lunz talks about being straight foward and keeping campaigns serious. Also by keeping the ad serious and at the same time relatable to the voters. Once they have the voters relating to them thats usually a good sign that the voter will vote for them.

I chose this Tv ad because when I first saw it on TV i though it was very sweet that she had her daughter say such nice things. I think that many of the voters did on some level relate to that, even though Linda Mcmahon didn't win.
Frank Luntz lists 6 rules to follow when creating a campaign ad. Number one: Don't hate the player, hate the game. In this rule, Luntz describes how Alex Sink successfully used her ads not to pick at her opponents, but to criticize how many politicians ads "bicker" about other candidates and what they may have done wrong. Instead, she focused on actual problems for example saying in one of her ads "Partisanship: I've got no patience for it...". Number two: Anti-Washington is Essential. In this rule Luntz explains how Michael Bennet was appointed to senate by simply bad-talking Washington, saying "I've been in Washington for only a year, but it didn't take that long to see the whole place is broken. It's time to give them a wake-up call...". Bennet is taking the same standpoint as us, the disgruntled people. By taking our side, and having the same viewpoint as the people, he is able to relate better, and reach more people that will support him. Number three: Straight talk works best. Luntz describes how being straight-up and personal will work best to get your support from the people. If you can show them that you've sacrificed for the greater good of th people, as Susana Martinez has, then you're just about set. The more open and truthful a politician is about themselves, the better. Number four:"If I have to sacrifice, so should my representatives." In this rule, Luntz explains how becoming very wealthy and living in luxury will hurt your rep. with the people, as it did Harry Reid. Many people are criticizing him for becoming a millionaire on a Senator's salary. Number five: Fake doesn't sell. Luntz talks about how Linda McMahon paid for ads with actors in it, which failed miserably. Many voters would like to see a real, genuine ad with the politician actually in it. Number six: Be serious. Joking around and talking about improbable things in ads are a no no. The people would rather here you talk about actual problems, and how were going to solve them, not a 50 ft. tall Nancy Pelosi Godzilla.
ReplyDeleteI think Kendrick Meeks ad is so-so. He is with real citizens out in public showing himself, and he is talking about real problems and how to save them. He isn't wasting time down-talking and opponent or making jokes, he's being serious about what he's believes in and is clearly displaying that in his ad.
I think that Lunz has a successful political advertisement because people can see what he is all about when he talks to the people he doesn’t joke around and doesn’t try to make himself look better. There is 6 rules they should follow the first two are that they should show what they are up against and what is going on and all the problems that can occur because it makes the voters see what they are about. Also that when they get to Washington they have to prepare what will happen there. I like that how Anastasia and Natalie talk about the different points and that how they have to follow certain rules and they really both should me another side of what they were getting at. The people want to see a person who is really running for the right reasons and also has a purpose in the race ad who is for the people and not making fun of other people.
