McLaughlin Assignment 2 DUE 9/22/10

Now that Christine O'Donnell has won the Republican Senate Primary in Delaware, there are serious doubts over whether she can actually defeat her democratic opponent (Chris Coons) in the general election. Based on our discussion in class and the two articles below, state your opinion as to whether or not you think she can win and why you think so. Perhaps more importantly, examine each of the candidates’ websites and decide for yourself: if you were a resident of Delaware, who would you vote for? Why?

  1. Christine O'Donnell seems like she may win from the support she has now from the Republicans. But, it just seems now that she has not a very good past that would help her win in this election. I mean it all goes down to your backround and what you have given back. She was involved with witchcraft which is actually a very surprising thing. When you look at these people you are voting for you see them as someone who is not actually perfect but, someone who should be a good influence over all others. Chris Coons has a relationship[ with Deleware. Having been brought up as a person with a give back mentality I would think most people would vote for him anyway. I haven't looked it up but, you don't hear his name in any weird stuff as O'Donnell. I would say he has the better chance. But, who knows with her in the Tea Party group she would get alot of support.

  2. I dont think that Cristine O'Donell can win this general election because everybody is saying a lot of bad stuff about her like where did she get the money from because before she had nothing then out of the thin air she got money to run her election. I heard in the vido that they were going against her basiclly the whole time & the only two people who defended her were the two ladys.

I say i wiould pick Chris coons because guided people from New castle county through the toughest economic downturn in generation & He's cut millions in wasteful spending.

  3. I do feel that Christine O'Donnell has a chance of winning this election only if dedicated Republicans vote for her simply because they wouldn't want a Democrat to win, even though O'Donnell is just as bad as the democratic opponent. But if thats not the case where republicans will stay behind what they believe i think she doesn't really have a great chance. While reading some info on her and hearing her speak i don't really feel she is ready to represent Delaware. Her ideas and thoughts are very general i feel and she just seems a little lost.
If I were a resident of Delaware, I would most definitely not vote for O'Donnell even if i were a Republican because she does not hold the ideas i feel she should to represent my state in senate.I feel she is not strong enough to make the correct choices and we wont benefit from her. She also has too much of a bad reputation so even if she did do a good job i don't think it would be easy for people to over come the past and it would constantly be a problem.

  4. After reading this article and reviewing the notes in class, I think that her chances are very slim. Reason being that in the article it stated that O’Donnell has financial issues. She has no steady income or savings. If this continues, she will have no way of paying for ads and campaigns or much less support our country. I also think her chances of winning would be slim because after watching today’s McLaughlin show, they discussed that she came from a poor background and the two main people were saying that she can’t be trusted. Maybe those are rumors, but a lot of viewers of that show might probably listen to what they have to say and vote against her. In the article it said she was also supported by Sarah Palin, A person who won the republican nominations for vice president but didn’t win the actual elections. Voters will probably take that to account as well. If I was in Delaware, I probably would vote for neither of them. Not because I am against the person but because I don’t know that what they tell the public will be true. O’Donnel wants to ban guns and lower taxes and I agree, but how do I know she’ll live up to it. Coons says he would increase aid in unemployment and improve education but those are very hard tasks especially from what we’ve experienced, how would we know that that can all change.

  5. I am unsure if Christine O’Donnell will win the election. Mainly, I think that she has the better chance of winning, based on Republican numbers, and clearly she has already one in the base of what a primary election is supposed to tell. However, it seems that after she won the primary election many people have changed their opinion on her. Fellow members of her party find her unfit for Senate. I think that with negative press coming from the opposing party and her own, that this could have a major influence on voting.
If I was a resident of Delaware, I would not vote for O’Donnell. She seems very unsure of a lot of things, and in my opinion, I feel that she just wants the title of Senator. I also think that, although her personal and background history should not affect her political standing, in some ways it very well does. The fact that she is 42 and single seems peculiar to me. Is she unable to devote to a commitment? I am also worried about her spilling that she had been involved in witchcraft. Holding position as a Senator allows you to see and hear a lot of things that should not be known by others. I think if she was able to loosely spill something as silly and bizarre as that, she should not be considered fit to be in Senate.

  6. I believe that it is a 50/50 chance that Christine O’Donnell will win the election. I believe that if people start judging what she has been doing in High School and what her past was that she would not win this election. Many Republican’s have been going against her in this election and that shows that maybe she is unfit for this position. Of course I think that if people do base this election off of the things she did in High School it will have a negative impact on her political standing. If I were able to vote as a resident of Delaware I would not be voting for O’Donnell. I don’t think she really knows how to be a Senator and won’t fulfill the duties as well as someone else could. If all this negative press is coming about her now imagine what we will find out once she is elected. I think someone else can better fill the position as Senator, I feel as if she is not ready for this huge task.

  7. In my opinion Christine O'Donnell is not yet ready for office. Until just about ten weeks ago she had no funding or support and was not a likely candidate. Then out of the blue the Tea Party Movement backs her and shes on fire. The only thing i do give her credit for is beating a man who was in the house for nine terms and former Governor of Delaware Mike Castle. However Chris Coons however guided his country through one of the worst economic downturns all the while restoring more power to his country government. I like him because he is more "small town" and for the working and middle class people. He also studied abroad in Kenya and even wrote a book on South Africa and the U.S. Divestment Movement. Another reason I don't particularly Like O'Donnell is because she is a former reporter for Fox News or as Bill Mahr might say, Fox noise, which means that she may be biast. Of course lastly she is a supporter of the Tea Party Movement which is a populist movement or people against a select few of elites over federal acts like the Emergency Stabilization act of 2008. What grind my gears is that its a populist movement for the people yet a ticket to a convention it can cost up to 500 dollars. In my eyes she is just not fit and far to young. She is single and can not possibly support the ideals of families.

~ I feel as that Christine O'Donnell would win for the wrong reasons, mainly I feelshe would win out of the need of pity because she is a women. I know it may sound harsh but I feel as many people in our society would vote for O'Donnell just for the simple fact that she is a women. I agree with what we saw in class on the McLoughlin video when they quoted what the republican said that she was untrustworthy and unfit. I find it quite weird that she had absoulty know money for campaign or anything and she still managed to get up to senate. I think that for the simple fact she will win just because she is a women, and feel that it is un fair.

  9. I honestly think that Christine O’Donnell, has less of a chance to actually win the title of Senate for Delaware. Reading the articles and information about her, I can say I didn’t get much out of who she is, and what exactly she wants to even do for Delaware. Her website doesn’t even have a campaign, so I don’t know how I would be able to understand her views and perspectives on important issues, like health care or education. I learned that she is against stem cell research, and supports gay rights, as well as pressing for public schools to teach creationism. The article even states how she wants off shore drilling, and is against abortion. While it may be good to know certain opinions she has on overly expressed topics, I feel that she never poses how she wants to go about helping education, or why she is against things like abortion. Chris Coons on the other hand, has a huge campaign and a well-produced website to search through, so I can understand where he is heading in his ideas, if he would be Senate for Delaware. He points out each vital topic that needs to be discussed and expresses his views and opinions about what he would do to change it. O’Donnell doesn’t do that at all, and that is why I think she isn’t as strong as a candidate. If I was in Delaware I would vote for Coons, mainly because I learned more about him, and what he supports. I will know what he wants to do to help the state of Delaware.

  10. I don’t think Christine O’Donnell can win because she has no political background. Chris Coons however, has been a county executive and has done a lot for Delaware. If I were a resident of Delaware, I would vote for Coons because I feel he has more experience. I think he is more fit to fill the position because he has done positive things for Delaware already, like cutting “millions in wasteful spending.” O’Donnell on the other hand has no expertise in the matter. I also think that the negative criticism surrounding O’Donnell will greatly impact the outcome of the general election. The criticism that O’Donnell is receiving from her own party will disadvantage her. These comments can work in favor of Coons when the time comes for voters to decide.

  11. As far as Christine O'Donell. Luck can be on anyone's side. So, I believe this was a direct case of that. Her luck could take her further and she could even win the seat. Personally, as me being a resident of Delaware; I would not vote for her at all. Her background isn't for politics. I believe she could of been a great marketing tool, for another politician. The little stunt she tried to pull, with the "I won in two states". He said, She said. Blah Blah to me. That looks foolish on her part. She doesn't seem special in anyway. With the democratic nominee, Chris Coons. I would vote for him, because I think that he promotes the same things that I stand for. As far as healthcare, military and education.

  12. based on their websites, christina o'donnell doesn't sound to convincing, it's more of resume that shows her acomplishments without her actually saying what the results were of those great things. There's nothing really solid about her profile. The fact that it was a lot of what people thought of her versus the actions she's taken to help the government & people, it was really unbalanced. It shouldn't matter if you brought show ratings, - what have you done to change for the better?

I don't think she's going to win, Chris Coon's website provided more information and facts about what he's done for the people in Delaware such as restoring fisical power to the county government. It was more assuring to me.

Can she win? i'm not too sure, she does only have a 23% approval rating so obviously not too many people are thrilled about her.

  13. I feel that Christine O'Donnell has a chance of winning the election for senate of Delaware, maybe not the highest chances but there is a possibility. Although even republicans are going against her because of her reputation and done in the past, I believe that republicans will still vote republican because they would rather see a republican in the senate seat rather than a democrat. Although there is the option of just not voting that’s basically just handing the win to the democrats. Regardless of what she has done I feel that there is a chance that republicans will vote for her. I do how ever feel that Chris Coops has something over her although he has also had his past as well, in my opinion he seems like the better candidate. I noticed while looking at O’Donnell’s page that her main goal was to sell herself based on what she’s done as far as education and how well known she is, who she knows and what she’s done with this well known people. While Chris Coops page was much shorter and sweeter and concentrates more on what he’s done for Delaware and of course also education, which I think is more important seeing as how your running for the senate seat in Delaware.

  14. I think that Christine O'Donnell everyone makes mistakes in there past and everyone should be given a second chance. Many people are closed minded in many ways and everything has to be perfect. So she went out with someone into witch craft she didn’t get married to him and she isn’t practicing it herself. The interview was years ago and if the video didn’t come out then nobody would have known. She had the courage and the bravery to admit to something that’s not a big deal and then stood up for herself. That takes a lot for somebody to and she had the courage to do so. All these other people in politics hide everything or give people money to not blackmail them with she didn’t, because of that I think she could win.

  15. I believe Christine O'Donnell will defeat her democratic opponent Chris Coons. Unfortunately in our society the majority of voters are not concerned with the candidates issues, what they bring to the table, and what they plan to change. They care about social standings and silly individual characteristics. A lot of people go into the booths with no background/history of the candidates fundamentals, the names appear and they think "oh, im not voting for her because I heard she practiced wicca."

However, I think in this situation the way the public thinks will be in O'Donnell' favor. She is backed by the tea party which gives off the message that she is interested in bringing change, not your run of the mill republican but someone who really has some new liberating ideas that can make actual changes. Just like there were many people who voted for President Obama because they thought we needed an African American for president and that it was time for a change not really caring to know about his actual views. Unfortunately I believe the same will happen with Christine and she will be the one elected.

If I was a resident of Delaware I would vote for Chris Coons because I believe in his issues. He wants to stop depending on foreign oil, create more wind farms, and track how many greenhouse gas emissions were producing. I am a big environmentalist and am for all of these points. As far as all of his points in general they are in depth, multiple paragraphs, discussed on his campaign site where as his rival only has brief sentences on each topic. This makes me feel like Coons knows where hes going with his ideas and not just saying them.

  16. Christine O’Donnell has the possibility to win based off of numbers alone. The fact is that the Tea Party is a force to be reckoned with but on the other hand, Tea Party is a loose cannon in the GOP. The fact is that if O’Donnell let Castle win unopposed, it would have been much better for the Republican Party in the long run. Even though the Tea Party have conservative views which are in line with the views of the Republican Party, its intentions are still selfish. According to Bloomberg News, if Castle had won, he would be leading Coons with an extra 10%. This is the exact example that the GOP needs to prove that the Tea Party do not have the Republican Party’s best interest in mind. Such a crucial moment in US history where every seat is needed in the Senate, but O’Donnell and the Tea Party comes and practically hands the Democratic Party a seat that could be easily won by Castle. O’Donnell definitely has the ability and has the possibility to win and for my reasoning I base off of numbers. The combined number of registered Independent and Republican voters outnumbers the amount of registered Democrats but then again, Independent voters are a swing vote so it’s not definite that she will win by numbers alone. As for her policies, I do not feel like they will hold up in the blue state of Delaware but then again the Tea Party is once again a force to be reckoned with. Finally taking into consideration of all the factors, I have to say that O’Donnell can win the Senate seat.
If I were a resident of Delaware, I would vote for Coons just based on merit. Coons have more experience, went to a better college, and have a good holding in politics already. And truthfully, seeing O’Donnell just brings back remnants and memories of Palin which is almost enough to deter me from voting for her. Another reason is that she and her party are loose cannons in Congress. Self proclaimed Republicans but yet willing to hurt the overall GOP’s chances for the Senate seat because of her allegiance to the Tea Party doesn’t let her strike me as a safe and predictable person to have in the Senate seat and because of those reasons, I would rather vote for Coons than O’Donnell.

  17. I do not think Christine O' Donnell will win in the election against Chris Coons because for one thing she doesn’t have enough endorsements. Also i do not believe that she will get enough support by November, when the election is only a month away. Like the article says, O' Donnell has no steady income or savings and she was fired from a past printing Job because she was stealing company stuff to promote her own business. Also, she admits she was sued for gender discrimination. If i was a resident in Delaware I would vote for Chris Coon because he has been elected again and again for nine years therefore he is much more experienced in the government field.

  18. I think Christine O’Donnell does have a chance to win because she has good intentions for Delaware. I think that she presents her ideas well and although it did seem like she lie, what she wants the state to benefit from her personally and that does seems true. However, I believe when she did lie about her wins it put her in a bad spot light and the journalists who interviewed that brought that up and made the issue seem like it was a severe lie that created havoc, and that could damage her image to the viewers and voters. I don’t think she will win because based on the two articles and as a reader; I was drawn more towards the bad side about her rather than focusing on the good side. Based on the websites presented and side by comparison I think I got more information out of Chris Coons website than Christine O’Donnell’s, especially when I went to the ‘issue’ section of both websites. Therefore, I believe if I were to be a resident of Delaware I would vote for Chris Coons because I think I got more information on his issues that he wants to resolve.

  19. I do not believe that Christine O'Donnell can win in the general election. So far, Christine has a future of losing, with her bad reputation she holds now. This reputation isn't even from the other side of the Democrats, but from her own party, the Republicans. How does Christine have a slight chance of winning, when her own party does not accept Christine by who she is, or how she's working. They're saying that she is crazy, and shouldn't win the election. So unless the Republicans vote for the Democratic party, Chris Coons , which is not likely, then they will not vote at all, making votes higher for Democrats, making the Democrats win. If I was a resident of Delaware, I would vote for my own party, Chris Coons, as I am a Democrat, and as not only do I think he is a better candidate, but he is less loony in some aspects compared to Christine O'Donnell as well.

  20. If I was a resident of Delaware I would vote in favor of Chris Coons. I believe with his experience as a County Executive and having worked as an attorney for Delaware based W.L Gore & Associates, he would be good for the position. He has had a positive influence by cutting millions in wasteful spending and restored fiscal responsibility to county government he also lowered the crime rate 12 percent by removing dangerous parole violators. I do not believe that Christine O’Donnell can win. She doesn’t have the prior experience that Chris Coons has. Unlike Coons she doesn’t have her party backing her up with many of the accusations going around. Eleni Danginis pd 5

  21. I think O'Donnell does not have such a good shot at winning the elections due to the fact of her shady background. She has no savings, and her history of job lines has not been to good, her opponent that she beat is not backing her calling her "untrustworthy, and a liar" In my shoes i would vote for Coons because of the two there are just to many negative factors that add up on the O'Donnell side.

  22. I think Christine O'Donnell can win, because she has a good vision and values such as slash government spending and oppose abortion. She’s always positive no matter what other people do or say to her. Even she has no steady income and has no backup, she still keep running for election.

But, if I were a resident of Delaware, I’ll vote for Chris Coons, because he post more information. He warns of letting Biden’s seat fall into ultraconservative hands. I’ll also vote for him because he received 50 percent.

  23. I believe that Christine O'Donnell does not have a good chance of winning this election. Based on that she didn't have a lot of money going into this race. Also that she is untrustworthy and she is unfaithful as well. Know Christine does have some background she has served as a social advocate in Washington, D.C., participating in regular White House and Capitol Hill strategy meetings and leading delegations to the United Nations to lobby on behalf of pro-family global policies. She’s successfully debated Cabinet members, lawmakers and international leaders. But Christine did have problems with money her house foreclosed and she doesn't have a college diploma. She also owes money to the IRS and she isn't a Delaware resident. Christine is also single which I think doesn't help. Now Chris Coons has a family and worked as an attorney for Delaware-based W.L. Gore & Associates, one of the 200 largest privately-held companies in the U.S. Chris doesn't have trouble with money and that he seems more aware of the issues and he also has a college degree. He has a better chance because the people believe in him and they trust him.

  24. i think Christine O'Donnell can definitly win the general election. She one once and she can do it agian. Just because of her financial issues, has no steady income or savings and owns no property, dosent mean shes any less capable of helping this country in any way she can. I would vote for O'Donnell because she promised "to slash government spending and oppose abortion, while her support for guns rights earned her the backing of the National Rifle Association" to help the growing war with Mexico.

  25. In my opinion, I think that Christine O’Donnell would be a good candidate. But her past doesn’t inspire me to want to vote for her. The Primaries back in 2006, she ran against Michael Protack and lost. She then ran in the 2008 primary and lost again. She also had no money, and her opponent this year was quoted saying that she was untrustworthy and unfit for office. Yet after all the publicity on this controversy, she still won but not by much. If I was a citizen in Delaware and able to vote, I think I would have voted for Chris Coons. Besides the point that he had the most approval rate throughout the election, he has more of a positive political background when compared to O’Donnell.

  26. From reading the articles and watching the video can possibly see why she has many votes. She’s not like our senates where in New York you need to be rich or somewhat wealthy to run for election. In Delaware their more of a small family from what it seems to me. They dont care about the money they care about someone that can relate to them, and feel their pain, and has experienced their struggle, for example she stated, “I’m not a trust-fund baby -- most Delawareans can relate.”
She is getting money as she said in her video by those who want her to win, and from what it seems like she has a lot of support even from Texas chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee has donated $42,000

  27. O'Donnell is a smart young woman, seems to want what she is going for. Although others who run for the senate and other positions in elections spend a lot of money for whatever it is thet are running for. O'Donnell hasn't spend anything, most of the money has came in from others.
O'Donnell does seem to be interested in the people; although only for one reason, to personally ask people for their vote for the elections held in November. How can she expect to gain peoples votes when she goes against groups and people in society. O'Donell is anti-gays and is making public that she wants schools to teach children about creationism; there goes her votes. Unemployment seems to be no worry to her because she has no plan for the unemployed. Many predict O'Donnell will not win the majority of votes. Official states that she won't be able to win unless some money is going to be taken out of her pocket, who's going to support her? It can't always be the tea party or even an ex elective that is supporting her with money. There is too much information on O'Donnell that'll make her go downhill. Coming from a background of low income how is she able to afford all her campaign Ads? and will she even be able to afford all this until she gets elected or will she have to back down? She has not had the much needed experience to run for office. Her only income as of now is coming from her supporters, but once they stop sending the money she'll be in trouble. Her chances seem very slim, considering who she is running against. Chris Coons comes from a good background with more then enough money and a family at home. He also seems much more experienced then O'Donnell and is on point as far as what he believes and wants to change whereas O'Donnell seems unsure and still questioning what she's doing running for senate. 31. I think the way Christine O’Donnell is going with this election she will not be elected. Just by seeing the way her campaign is many people are having doubts. She is an finical issue the fact that she hasn’t put any money into her campaign. All the money towards her campaign has been given to her towards her campaign. So far from what I have heard about her from the McLaughlin show and other resources she doesn’t seem to have enough experience to run for office. Don’t get me wrong she seems to be some what of a smart girl but not enough experience but she is still young. Plus all these rumors spreading about her on live talk shows which they use evidence from her from pre recordings, its just putting her into more of a whole. This just gives real doubt of her being elected, if so many people would probably be incredibly shocked. She is going to have to really step up her game on this one if she really wants to win this election.

  34. Now that Christine O'Donnell has won the Republican Senate Primary in Delaware, I think that she doesn't has a chance of winning. As shown in the numbers, the democrats has 282,000(k) and the Republicans were in the lead with 328,0009(k). However, what has many people concerned is the past events in O'Donnells life. One major concern is that she has no campaign and no money to support her in her campaign. Another major concern is that she has lied in the past which makes her unreliable and untrustworthy. Who wants to vote for someone who has lied and has done witch craft? Deleware needs a person who is fully committed and has no history of being irresponcible. O'Donell is also anti-gays and wants schools to teach students about creationism. Even though she is in the lead, if her campaigns don't begin to increase and she doesn't put money towards her campaign people will not vote for her.
If I were a resident in Deleware, I would vote for O'donells opponent, Chris Coons. Coons comes from a family background of political studies and has put money time in effort into his campaigns to make sure they are successful. and he does NOT have a background of lieing and untrustworthiness. He has also been a active part of Deleware by cutting millions in wasteful spending. He has the experience to do the job right.

Christine O'Donnell has won the Republican Senate Primary in Delaware, I think she has chance of winning because when it comes down to number she has a greater chance and so what if she did witch it was in her past, her opponent was a communist but nobody seems to care for it. What happen in the personal life is personal it has nothing to do with their professional life. The only thing that hurting her chances is her financial issues. Also she promised "to slash government spending and oppose abortion, while her support for guns rights earned her the backing of the National Rifle Association" to help the growing war with Mexico. If I was a resident of Delaware I wouldn't vote I would just wait and see what happen, see where the chips fall. I think the United States and Mexico should work together and create a compromise to resolve their issue with the drug war that’s going on . United States is selling drugs that they originally got from Mexico and U.S also is supplying them with guns, which they use to hurt and kill people.

  36. Now that Christine O'Donnell has won the Republican Senate Primary in Delaware, I don't think that she has a chance of winning she does not have enough experience and did not even have a campaign. How can someone win wihtout having a campaign? It seems very hard to me. Statistics also show that the democrats has 282,000(k) and the Republicans were in the lead with 328,0009(k). Also in Donnell's past life she has had a few events occur that show she isn't stable for the position and has many people questioning about her abilities. She has lied about certain things so how can the people trust her? They can't. She has also done witch craft which is very suspecious to the people. On the other hand, Chris Coons is in the family business. He comes from a background of family that are in politics which can help him make thr right decesions and succeed in his campaign to help society. He has already show that he is a successful candidate in Deleware by cutting wasteful spending in the past. If I were a resident in Deleware I would choose Chris Coons because he has already proved that he can make a difference.
